Departure over the Tizi n’Tichka pass with the High Atlas opening on both sides, then the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified village that so many films have used for its earthen towers. On to Zagora, where camels carry you to the camp for sunset over the sand. Moroccan dinner and night under tents.
Breakfast and a short camel ride at first light, then the road east across the Anti Atlas, meeting the nomad families who still live along it. Lunch in Alnif, a pause in Rissani, cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, and arrival in Merzouga in time for the camel caravan into the dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset. Night at a camp in the heart of the dunes.
Sunrise from the top of a dune, then the road to Tinghir and the Todra Gorges, walked on foot between cliffs three hundred meters high. A stop above the Dades valley, then Kelaa M’Gouna and the Skoura oasis, with lunch on the way. Dinner and night in a small inn in Ouarzazate.
A walk through the old kasbah of Ouarzazate and a visit to its film studios, where Gladiator and Game of Thrones were shot. Back over the mountains by the Kasbah of Telouet and the Tizi n’Tichka. Drop off at your hotel in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
